Bryan
Allen |
|
Bryan
Allen is not a name you would expect to see on Georges' fightcard and I
think that Allen would probably prefer not to be on Georges' fightcard.
I think
this stemmed from Georges' role in running Matias Ohlund into Vancouver
goalie Johan Hedberg. Unfortunately nobody has shown video of this
fight but according to the radio call Georges got his arm out of his jersey
and threw 5 or 6 unanswered lefts before the linesman came in.
Bryan
Allen is a big guy at 6'4", 220 pounds but he is not a match for Georges
and apprently it showed in this one.

Andrew Peters |
|
Peters is a big boy at 6'4 247 pounds and he has been going after all of the big boys in the league and he got the biggest when he asked Georges for a go.
This fight went much like anyone in the know would expect, after a square off they come together and Georges hammers a defenseless Peters to the ground with about 5 lefts. Chalk up an easy win for Georges.
It's good to see Georges consistently give all of these up and comers a chance.

Krzysztof Oliwa |
|
Two (that's "2") seconds into the game these two had the gloves off and went at. After a long square off they came together and Oliwa slipped. Georges let him get back up without touching him and then they went at it. A very good toe to toe exchange followed with both guys looking like they landed some good ones.
Call this one a good solid draw.

Andrei Nazarov, Round III |
|
Georges' laid a nice hit on a Pheonix player so Nazarov comes over to challenge Georges. Im not sure when Naz is going to realize he shouldn't fight Georges.
This one looked like their last two fights. Georges' gets the helmet off and fires lefts at the back of Nazarov's head which is buried into Georges' chest. Not a ton of damage done but a clear win for Georges that seemed to spark the Oilers a little bit.
This was Georges' first fight since he broke his hand and it seemed to hold up okay.

Matt Johnson, Round IX |
|
Nobody has fought Georges more than Matt Johnson has and now after 9 tries Johnson is still looking for his first good showing against Georges.
The two super heavies had a chat at a face off and then the gloves dropped. They had a long square off with both guys trying hard to get the upperhand. Georges grabbed on first, took off Johnson's helmet and threw 3 or 4 punches. I'm pretty sure one of them landed solid on the side of Johnson's head and the rest were maybe grazing blows. As usual Johnson was off balance the entire fight and the one good punch that landed just put him more off balance before he eventually fell. I'd give Georges the win for controlling the short fight and throwing/landing the only punches.
These two have a good rivalry, unfortunately it hasn't produced very many good fights. It will take at least a few good battles before the Johsnon v. Laraque rivalry will be close to the Grimson v. Laraque rivalry.

Brad May |
|
After Georges hammered May with a big hit you could kind of see this one coming.
At the faceoff they were talking and a few seconds into the play they decided to go. Georges was hesitant to drop his gloves thinking May might try to sucker him into a penalty. When the gloves finally dropped they had a nice square off before coming together. When they grabbed on May was smart and started throwing wild punches not allowing Georges to get his helmet off. May threw about 5 hail mary's, none of which landed solid. Georges came back with 3 or 4 lefts, a couple of which did land. The flurry of lefts put May to the ground to end the fight.
Give Georges the edge for ending the fight with a strong flurry but May certainly had a nice showing. I don't think many people would have thought that May would have hung in so well against Georges.

Matt Johnson, Round X |
|
You could refer to Matt Johnson round III to Matt Johnson round IX or read this. All their fights seem to be the same.
This one started off the faceoff. Georges went up to Matt and I don't think gave him much of a choice. As usual they dropped the gloves, had a brief uneventful exchange, followed by a Matt Johnson slip. Georges as usual looked a little better but this was basically a draw in a bad fight. It could have been a beauty though because both guys were looking to land a bomb but neither did. Georges just missed with a big one near the end of the fight that would have done damage.
Ten fights now between them. Georges has still never lost to Matt but the fights haven't been good for awhile.

Shawn Thornton, Round III |
|
| The TV of this fight sucked bad. Here's my description from seeing it live, the TV got there way late. Georges went over to Thornton and was talking to him. Thornton got the gloves off fast and grabbed Georges before he had his gloves off (Thornton has done that in all three times they have fought now - Georges should be more ready for this guy). Thornton got Georges jersey up. Georges said he couldn't see a thing. Both guys were throwing in a decent toe to toe type exchange. Laraque landed the best punch by far, a left that snapped Thornton but Thornton looked to land more. This is where the TV came in when they got tied back up with Georges throwing noogies. Thornton finished strong and ended up on top. You could say draw. You could say Georges because he landed the best punch (which apparently cut Thornton. Georges said he had his blood on his jersey) but you could definitely say edge Thornton because he looked good throughout - got Georges jersey up and landed punches.
In the second period Georges went to Thornton and asked him to go again but Thornton wouldn't (apparently because he may have been cut). Kind of a blessing in disguise that he they didn't go because later in that shift Georges finally got his 1st goal of the year which in MacT's books is far more important than any amount of fighting, as annoying as that is.

Feb 11, 04 vs Atlanta
Francis Lessard |
|
| There wasn't any TV of this fight in particular as it was part of a 6 man line brawl with 1:49 to go in the 3rd period of a feisty game. Every player had a man and Georges had Lessard, who had been an agitator all night.
From first hand accounts of people that were there there were long stand-offs in these fights and Laraque's was no different. Alot of talking and movement without anyone throwing anything. Georges was looking around at the other guys, I think to make sure no one else was in trouble. When they started throwing them I don't think Lessard knew what hit him. Georges landed several good lefts that connected. They fell to the ice and got up again ready to go some more but the linesman came in and broke it up - probably for the fact that Lessard was already cut. They probably saved him from further injury as the camera shot of him afterwards showed the cut and red marks on his face.
A pretty decisive win for Georges in a very exciting and rare spectical.

Feb 13, 04 vs Minnesota
Matt Johnson, Round XI |
|
| Well it took 11 tries but Johnson finally got the better of Laraque.
This one started with Johnson pushing with Jason Smith. Laraque comes in and they drop them and grab on. Johnson lands a right and then a big right to Laraque's earhole (I think) that makes Laraque stumble a bit. Georges loses his balance and Johnson throws another that may have landed. Georges forces himself back up to try and come back. No more punches landed by either guy before they wrestle their way to the ground.
Clear win for Johnson. The most decisive loss of Georges NHL career. I would have liked to see Georges try to avenge the loss but he didn't see a shift against Johnson for the rest of the game. I kind of thought Georges was too passive in this fight. He should have been throwing lefts before Johnson had a chance to connect.

Jeremy Stevenson |
|
| After both Staos and Moreau made ill advised decision's fighting the much tougher Stevenson, Georges was left to clean up the mess and he did.
On their first shift against each other Georges skates directly over to Stevenson and they go. Georges landed 3 lefts and they fall. They get back up and Georges lands 4 more lefts to the back of Stevenson's head.
Clear win for Georges. Good job by Georges defending his teammates by pounding on Stevenson. That's 3 straight games where Georges has come in and defended guys. Also nice to see Georges get back into the win column in a decisive fashion.

Feb 18, 04 vs Colorado
Peter Worrell |
|
| This is one I never thought I would see. These two went for dinner the night before the game but when duty calls I guess friendship doesn't matter.
With Colorado down 2-0 Worrell challenged Georges and they went. Worrell avoided a square off by grabbing Georges quickly. The fight wasn't much. It was fairly long but neither guy landed anything more than a jab. Georges arm got tied up in his jersey for a bit but Worrell didn't capitalize.
This one was a draw in a bad fight between probably 2 of the top 4 guys in the NHL.
