2001 - 2002 FIGHTCARD

Donald Brashear, Round III

These guys went at it early.  Georges was at the tail end of a shift and of course Brashear had just gotten on the ice when he decided to challenge Georges.  Georges will never turn down a fight so the gloves came off, the two heavyweights squared off and started throwing punches.  Both guys threw lefts with the only punch in the entire fight that landed was a left by Laraque that knocked Brashears helmet off.

No real damage done either way, these guys will see each other a lot this year so lets hope for a rematch.

Mike Brown

Mike Brown is a big, young fighter who will fight anybody.  He proved it in this exhibition game when he dropped the gloves with Georges.  Both guys threw punches but Georges threw more and landed more for the win.  Brown did hang in there though and escaped with no damage and a name like Georges Laraque added to his fight resume.

Scott Parker
The fight that all fight fans have been waiting for.  Laraque and Parker are probably the two toughest guys in the league and they finally went.

The fight was decent.  I really didn't anticipate either of these guys giving the other a chance to open up and they didn't.  They both threw some punches but none doing any serious damage.  Now that these guys have had a chance to see each other they will probably have some better fights down the road.

Matt Johnson, Round V

The Oilers were down 2-0 and not playing well when these two went off a faceoff.  The fight wasn't a great one - both guys threw punches but neither really landed anything. They had each other tied up for most of the fight.  Georges did get the team going, though. Shortly after the fight the Oilers picked up their game considerably.

Jody Shelley

Shelley made a dangerous hit on Niniimaa along the boards and it just so happened that Georges was on the ice within 10 seconds.  The gloves came flying off and these two put on a pretty good show.  Georges landed the better punches and controlled the fight.  He appeared to land a nice shot as Shelley was falling to end the fight.  Georges took a rare instigator in this one.

Andrei Nazarov
Andrei Nazarov is pretty tough and fights a lot but boy o' boy was he overmatched in this one.  They went on their first shift of the game.  The camera was late coming in but when it got there Georges had Nazarov bent over and was landing blow after blow to the back of his head.  Nazarov tried to make a comeback but he couldn't land anything, Georges was simply too strong.  Easy win for Georges in this one.

Scott Parker, Round II
This one started off in a wierd way.  The play had been over for about 20 seconds when they were talking. They asked the ref if they could go and he let them.

They started the fight in close and never got free from one another.  Georges was able to get Parker's helmet off and land some soft punches.  Parker had is left tied up well.  Parker may have landed a few harmless punches but niether guy was able to mount a serious attack in this draw.

I said after their last fight that you will probably never see these two really go toe to toe because they both realize how dangerous the other guy is.  They are, in my opinion, the two best fighters in the league.

Kevin Sawyer
Kevin Sawyer has been fighting everybody this year.  He came into this game with 17 fighting majors, which these days is a good seasonal total for most heavywieghts.

He challenged Georges off a faceoff and Georges, as always, accepted.  He manhandled Sawyer, throwing him around with his superior strength.  He landed a few shots and got Sawyer down. Being a gamer Sawyer got up for more and ate a big left and that was it for the fight.

Easy win for Georges. Sawyer is a tough customer but wasn't much of a match for Georges on this night.  Incidentally the radio call of this is probably Rod Phillips second best as far as Georges fights go, only behind the Rob Ray call.

Stu Grimson
For the 7th time these two heavyweights dropped the mitts.  The last 4 fights between them haven't been great, but this one was a beauty.

After just serving 2 minute minors for trying to fight, these two came out of the box and 7 seconds later had the gloves off.  Georges got the left going and landed several good punches for a decisive win.  Stu showed very little class after he got up by trying to throw punches over the linesman.  Considering Georges has had Stu down before and let up on him I was very surprised that Grimson, who is one of the best heavyweights of all time, would try to hit a guy after the fight is over.

I'm sure we will see these guys go again before this season is over.

  Dec 21, 01 vs Chicago
Aaron Downey
Downey is a young tough guy who hasn't fought Georges at the NHL level yet.  After this fight I doubt he'll make a habit of it.  With the Oilers going down 1-0 in the first 30 seconds of the game Georges went out to get his team going and Downey was the unlucky recipient of a beating.

Georges got the left going early and often. Downey ate a left uppercut that was by far the best punch of the fight.  When the linesman started to skate in he tried to throw a couple but it was a lost cause.

Bob Probert, Round II

These guys have fought twice now and both times Probert has come at Georges after Georges has already had a fight.  How convienent for Probert.  A tired Georges is probably not as hard to handle as he would if he was fresh.  It's worth noting that Georges has pounded both guys he's fought before Probert, and Probert is probably just defending his guys.

This time, Georges had just finished serving his penalty for beating on Downey.  He and Probert lined up at a face off and dropped the gloves.  An incredibly long square off before they came together.  The entire fight was in close with Georges throwing and landing more punches including an uppercut that appeared to land.  No damage done but an edge to Georges.

Probert is getting old so he has to be crafty when he faces guys like Georges.  In my opinion you probably will not see Georges fight this fighting legend again.

Matt Johnson, Round VI
These guys have fought a lot but they have never really had a very good fight.  The first 2 weren't bad but lately they have been short and uneventful.

This one was not much different.  They squared off and Johnson misses badly with a big punch and as usual falls down.  He got back up and Georges was able to get his helmet off and land a couple lefts.  Nothing damaging but an edge goes to Georges.

Matt Johnson is a huge guy but he has terrible balance.  He can't throw a punch and stay on his feet.

Dec 30, 01 vs New Jersey
Jim McKenzie
Big Jim McKenzie is one tough customer although outside of hardcore hockey fight fans he probably doesn't get credit for being one of the best fighters in the league, which he deserves.

They dropped the gloves off of a faceoff.  McKenzie got a couple in early before Georges came back with some lefts of his own.  On the way down McKenzie threw another left which I don't think landed.

A tough fight to call. One of McKenzie's punches gave Georges a black eye but the fight was by no means one sided.  I'd call it a draw but McKenzie's punches did more damage so some will give him the edge.

  Dec 31, 01 vs Calgary
Craig Berube
What can you say about Berube?  Well, how about he's washed up and he's turning into a cheap shot artist.  His antics may not cost him a beating against the likes of Anahiem or St. Louis but when you run Tommy Salo you must be crazy or just plain stupid.

The first time Georges got the chance to go after Berube he did.  When the camera came over Georges is landing lefts to Berube's ducked down head.  He falls to a knee and Georges stops punching.  The fight could have been over there but Berube decided to get up (providing more evidence that he is crazy or stupid).  When he got up he ate a big left to the chops and another left was all he could take before he fell down.

Berube sure had a lot to say after the fight but most was probably incoherent babbling after the left he took.  This was a big win for Georges.

Reed Low, Round II

Low took liberties with an Oiler and Georges went straight to him and dropped his gloves.  Georges really shouldn't be fighting since his hand is still pretty badly injured but with the team playing poorly he had to do something.

This wasn't much of a fight, neither guy landed anything.  They both had a good hold of each other.  An uneventful draw.

  Feb 08, 02 vs Dallas
John Erskine

For the second game in a row Georges fought with an injured hand and it was pretty obvious.  Erskine is a big guy but Georges at 100% shouldn't have much trouble with him.  This one was pretty much a wrestling match that ended with Georges throwing him down.

A draw in an uneventful fight.

Andrei Nazarov, Round II

For some reason Nazarov was willing to go with Georges again.  He must not have remembered what happened the last time they dropped the gloves.  Georges had Nazarov's head down and unloaded a number of hard lefts to his head and face.  A very dominating win for Georges.

This fight actually looked exactly like their first fight.

Chris Dingman, Round IV

Chris Dingman's new gloves spent more time on the ice than on his hands during his first shift as a member of the Lightning.  Fifteen seconds into this game Dingman, trying to impress his new team and fans, went looking for Laraque.  Dingman has never had any success against Georges and his new threads were not going to change that.

Georges overpowered Dingman and threw the only punches in the fight.  Dingman was able to get his head buried but it looked like a couple of the punches landed.  Call it a win for Georges. No damage done, but he controlled the fight and threw all of the punches.

Jody Shelley, Round II
With Columbus down 2-0 early, you knew this one would happen.  Right off a faceoff the gloves go down and they square off.  They tie up and Georges comes out throwing, and landing, about 5 quick shots before Shelley came back with a few good ones of his own.  Georges throws a punch that misses Shelley and his mementum carried him down.  Slight edge to Georges.  Only slight because the ending looked bad, even though it wasn't a punch from Shelley that made him fall.

Kevin Sawyer, Round II

With the Oilers playing terrible and Sawyer talking some liberties with some of the Oilers, including Comrie, you knew this one was brewing.

Off of a faceoff it looked like Georges was asking him to go.  When the puck dropped Sawyer made a move like he wasn't going to drop them and then lunged at Georges. Kind of a cheap move by Sawyer who was trying to gain an early advantage.  To no ones surprise it didn't work.  Georges got his helmet off and unloaded a number of hard lefts, beating him to the ice.

When they got up Sawyer had a cut on his nose and made kind of a funny "I can't believe I lost" type gesture.  I'm not sure what he expected because he's really been no match for Georges is either fight this year.  A unanimous decision to Georges in this one-sided tilt.
