Shawn Thornton (UR) |
|||
| Shawn
Thornton is trying to break into the NHL as a fighter and, for him, a tilt
with Laraque (who is one of the most respected fighters in the league)
is the way to do it. How he went about it may have been a bit foolish.
Thornton had earlier tried to jump Georges when he wasn't expecting it.
It turned out to be a 2 minute roughing call and you could tell that Georges
was upset. The next time the two were on the ice for a faceoff, they
went at it. Georges showed Thornton why he is the best fighter in
the NHL. He got Thornton's helmet off and hammered him to the ice
with a flurry of lefts. It looked like Thornton had a bit of a cherry
under his eye and a bruised ego in the penalty box after the fight.
Full marks for Thornton for guts, something that the Leafs main enforcer
Domi doesn't have.

Wade Belak (UR) |
|||
| This
one started after Georges laid a big check on Belak. They skated
beside each other and decided to go. It was pretty much a nothing
fight with neither guy really connecting before they went to the ground.
Belak is probably not in the same class as Laraque and wasn't about to
go toe to toe with him. I'm pretty sure that they will go again this
year 'cause this game really set the tone for a rough "Battle of Alberta"
this season.

Eric Boulton (UR) |
||
| Eric Boulton is
a guy who is trying to find a full time job with the Sabres, and since
Rob Ray won't go within 20 meters of Laraque it was Boulton who had to
face the music. The fight started with a bit of a square off before
Boulton grabbed on and buried his head in Georges' stomach. Georges
was able to use his strength to control Boulton and throw a lot of lefts.
He connected with a few good ones to Boulton's head. This was an
easy win for Laraque as he landed some very solid punches and flat out
over powered Boulton and made him look bad. Boulton had ice bags covering
his head after the game and sat out the Sabres next game due to stiffness
in his neck obviously caused by the fight.

Matt Johnson (9), Round IV |
||
| These two must
really dislike each other because they fight pretty much every time they
play. When the camera came over both men were on their knees. When
they came up Johnson threw a big right, his forearm hit Georges' arm and
knocked him off balance. Johnson then threw a big right that narrowly
missed. It may have grazed the edge of Georges' helmet. Georges
threw a couple of lefts and then both guys traded big shots. Georges
caught Johnson pretty well with his hit. Laraque then got the left
going a little and Johnson lost his balance. I'd give an edge to
Georges because he landed the only real damaging punch and kind of controlled
the end of the fight landing some lefts.

Sandy McCarthy (2), Round II |
|||
| Last year Sandy
got in one fight as a Carolina Hurricane. It was a one sided loss
to Georges Laraque. Since then I'm sure he's been itching for a rematch
and it happened at MSG, right at center ice.
The fight started with a nice square off before Georges went in, ripped McCarthy's helmet off and started throwing punches. McCarthy came back with a couple of his own jabs. Georges continued to throw punches and was able to tie up McCarthy and avoid his arm getting loose. Georges completely overpowered McCarthy. He controlled him the entire fight and was able to throw more punches at the end. Georges was obviously fatigued from firing a lot of punches and took McCarthy to the ice. No real damage was done by either fighter but since Georges controlled the fight, threw more punches and landed more punches, you'd have to give him the edge in this one. I can really see a great rivalry here but since they only face each other once a year it will never materialize. |

Dale Purinton (UR) |
|||
| Only minutes after
getting out of the box after his fight with McCarthy, Georges found himself
dancing with a very game young guy in Dale Purinton. This fight was
not a very good one. It happened very quickly. Both men
grabbed each other and threw a couple of quick little jabs to the helmet.
Once Purinton realized that he didn't get the jump on Georges he took him
down because if Georges has enough time to use his strength to control
a fighter then that guy is in trouble. A draw in pretty much a non-fight.
The worst part was that this fight put an end to any hope of a rematch
between Laraque and McCarthy.

Reed Low (UR) |
|||
| Reed Low is a
tough young kid. He is fast gaining a reputation as a guy who will
fight anybody and can hold his own in most of his fights.
I say "most" because Georges Laraque is the exception. These two went straight off the faceoff. Everybody in the rink knew they were going and as soon as the puck dropped and so did the gloves. Low lunged at Georges and tried to get the early advantage but Georges used his superior strength to tie him up, flip off his helmet in true Laraque fashion and get his left loose. When the left got loose it was all over for Low. Laraque threw about 10 hard lefts and connected solidly with about 4 or 5. Low was only able to muster one punch before being thrown to the ice. A truely one sided victory for Georges. I'm sure you can count on Reed Low and Georges Laraque fighting many times in their careers. |

Tie Domi (5) |
|||
| Georges has been
trying to go with Domi for 3 years now and this time he had to go.
Georges was trying to jack up his team who were down 2-0. He went
out to fight Domi, however Domi wasn't going to have anything to do with
it off the draw. Instead he waited until the play turned up ice and
came up behind Georges. Georges turned around and they went.
Domi threw a quick left that I'm not sure landed. Then Georges got
his left loose and fired about 4 shots that landed on Domi's abnormally
large and overly hard head. Sensing Laraque's superior power Domi
got in close and turned it into a wrestling match. Domi managed to
throw one other rabbit punch that did no damage before the fight ended.
The decision goes to Georges but I'd like to see these two go again and see if Georges could really get it going on Domi. |

Jamie Pushor (UR) |
|||
| Jamie Pushor is
not the type of guy that would usually drop the gloves with Laraque but
Georges, who hadn't fought in more than a month, seemed to press the issue
and got Pushor to drop the mitts.
It may not have been the smartest thing Pushor has ever done. He ate about 6 or 7 good punches and wasn't able to throw a single punch before he tied up Georges long enough for the linesman to jump in. Jamie Pushor is definately not a top heavyweight in the league but he showed some serious guts going with Laraque. |

Lyle Odelein (UR) |
|||
| This one looked
like it was in the making from the second period when these two exchanged
some words. Odelein was trying to send a message to his team and
what better way than to fight a guy like Laraque.
It looked like they were going to go off the face-off. Georges stood straight at him at the draw but Odelein skated away from him. They came up the ice together and Odelein grabbed Georges and they went at it. Georges was able to push him away, get his helmet off and throw about 3 or 4 punches to Odelein's 1 before Odelein fell down. Georges by no means destroyed Odelein like I think he would have if they had squared off, but he controlled him with superior strength and landed more punches so he gets the decision. |

Brian Marchment (UR) |
||
| This one had been
building up since the last time these teams played December 28, 00 when
Marchment layed one of his patented career ending attempts on Doug Weight.
Marchment knew he was going to have to face the music this time around
and he showed that he still has some guts by going up to Georges when they
got on the ice together and dropping the gloves.
Georges is far tougher than Marchment and it showed in this brief encounter. Georges grabbed him, landed about 3 or 4 hard quick punches before Marchment bailed and pulled Georges down. Marchment skated away with a cut lip which is far better than the smashed face he probably would have had if it went any longer. Marchment deserves a bit of
respect for going with Georges, but that is the price you have to pay when
you play like that. Georges also showed how much he has matured.
He knew the points were more important than the fight and, as Craig Simpson
pointed out, he handled it very well and was able to avoid the extra penalty.

Wade Belak (UR) |
|||
| Wade Belak is
trying to let everybody know that he can be the enforcer for the Calgary
Flames. What better way to do it than take on the toughest guy in
the league and actually hand him his first defeat on the year.
It started off the faceoff with a good square off. They came together and traded some lefts both men landing some. Georges landed the biggest shot early in the fight, a left which cut Belak a little between the eyes. Then Belak grabbed Georges' jersey and to everyones surprise somebody forgot to tie it down. Belak used that to his advantage throwing 3 or 4 punches while Georges head was covered. At first it looked like a bigger win than it was, and Belak did no real damage, but he did control the end of the fight and landed more punches for the decision. Ironically Belak had a visor
on later in the game. I'm not sure if it was related to the Laraque
punch but I'd imagine it was. This loss moves Georges fight record
for the year to 8-1-1. The biggest thing it does is finally get a
good heavywieght rivalry back into the Battle of Alberta. **I wouldn't
like to be Georges next opponent.**

Sami Helenius (UR) |
||
| Before you read
this, read the last line of the last fight description against Belak(**).
Boy, was I right! Sami Helenius had the unfortunate fate of being
Georges first victim after the Belak loss.
Helenius is a huge man. These two nearly fought after Helenius took a shot at Pittis and Georges took a shot at Helanius. A huge skirmish ensued but these two couldn't get their hands on each other. A couple of minutes after these guys served minor penalties (and I'm quite sure they planned this one) Georges got out and went straight at Helenius. Georges absolutely manhandled him as he got his left going. He embarassed Helenius in his own building. Georges landed a number of solid shots but none bigger than the bomb that left Sami's nose leaking badly. Helenius didn't even land a punch. When it was all said and done Georges had a tired arm and Sami had a sore and bloody face, but at least his hands were OK!! There is nothing better than
when Georges silences a crowd on the road by destroying their tough guy.
You got to give credit to Helenius for showing his teammates he will fight
the leagues top pugilist even though I don't think he had much of a choice.
He got Georges mad and he payed the price.

Stu Grimson (3), Round V |
|||
| If
you didn't know any better you would think that these two guys really dislike
each other. Rather it is just a case of two guys who know their jobs
and do them well. They really don't have anything against each other.
Grimson and Laraque are widely regarded as the two top pugilists in the
NHL, but unfortunately their last three fights have not lived up to the
standard set by the first two.
This one lacked the quality square off that all of their previous fights have had. They looked at each other for a couple of seconds and fired the mitts off. These guys know how dangerous each other are, and neither took any chances by opening this one up. It was mostly wrestling and Georges landed the only punches with a couple of weak jabs before both men lost their balance. Call this one a draw in a pretty bad fight. A rematch,
which would be their 6th fight in less than 3 years, may be in the works
when Edmonton hosts L.A. next Tuesday.

Wade Belak (UR), Round III |
|||
| The last time
these two met Belak got the decision. This time around it took less
than a minute for them to renew hostilities. Georges went straight
at Belak and these two big guys had a decent scrap. They each threw
a lot of punches but none of any serious damage. Georges' shirt came
up again but Belak wasn't able to really take advantage.
Wade is a big strong guy and
is a very good technical pugilist, but when it comes to punch power he
is in the bottom half of NHL heavies. He doesn't throw hard enough
punches to hurt anybody. In my opinion his poor punching is all that
is holding him back from being a top 5 fighter in the NHL. After
all, he is the only guy in the NHL who can say he is 1-0-2 against Georges.

Todd Fedoruk (UR) |
||
| Georges has fought
most of the rookie class of heavywieghts this season as you would expect.
These guys like to put Georges' name on their dance cards.
Fedoruk, unlike Reed Low, Eric Boulton and Dale Purinton, went wide open and toe to toe with Georges. Georges demonstrated a tremendous strength advantage in this one and was able to land some very good punches. Fedoruk wasn't able to land much more than a single punch but he didn't bury his head into Georges' stomach like Boulton did. He stood in there and took some very big punches before going down. Georges, as usual, could have taken advantage of his opponent falling but he showed his regular class and respect by backing off and not punching a guy while he's on the ground. Georges didn't have a lot of
trouble with the young Fedoruk but it is very nice to see a guy willing
to go toe to toe. Georges showed how effective he can be when a guy
is willing to open it up but don't expect to see it too often. There
are not many guys willing go toe to toe with Georges anymore.

Stu Grimson, (1), Round VI |
|||
| These two guys
fought yet again, but for the fourth straight time it wasn't all too exciting.
They just haven't opened it up like they did in their first 2 fights.
Georges threw some punches early, Stu threw some late. Both guys may have landed a couple punches but none that were very damaging. I've said it before and I still believe that both guys know how much damage the other can inflict so they are a little more cautious than they would be with a less talented fighter. This one was nothing more than
a draw it was a little better than their last fight but these two haven't
really had a good fight since Georges first full season.

Ryan Vandenbussche (UR) |
|||
| Ryan Vandenbussche
is a small heavyweight but he'll go with anybody. Most fight fans
will remember his fight vs the 6'7" Kyle Freadrich from last year, a fight
that ranks among the best of all time. He can go with most of the
big guys but with Georges he was in a little too deep.
The Oilers were down 2-0 to Chicago when Georges felt the need to shift the momentum. They were on opposite wings at a faceoff and when the puck dropped he went to Vandenbussche, dropped the gloves, grabbed on, threw a punch and then he threw the big one. He hit Vandenbussche flush on the mouth and dropped him like a bad habit. Being the sportsman he is he just skated away as a groggy and bloody Vandenbussche was helped off the ice by the officials. Georges did his job perfectly. The fight woke up the Oilers and they were able to salvage a tie. |
